DeMatha Catholic Hockey

DeMatha Hockey
Our mission is to provide an avenue for young men to excel as student athletes while maintaining the character of a “Gentleman and Scholar.”
The goal of our coaching staff is to provide the student athlete with the skills and resources necessary to develop their play and perform at the highest level. Our student athletes who attend DeMatha are from all over our region including Maryland, DC and Virginia. After graduation, our players have gone on to play Junior, College and even Professional Hockey! 

We hope that you take a few minutes to read below and become familiar with DeMatha Catholic High School and the DeMatha Hockey program.

HEAD COACH

Tony MacAulay – BIOGRAPHY

  • Born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
  • 21 years of Coaching Experience
  • 10th Season with the Network Hockey Development Program
  • Head Coach for the DeMatha Catholic High School Prep Team
  • Graduated in 1994 from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Recreation, majored in Sport Administration and Management. 

Playing Experience:

  • Played at the Junior “A” level in Canada (Maritime Junior A Hockey League).
  • Drafted by Sudbury Wolves (OHL), 9th round of the 1988 Priority Selection Draft, 122nd overall.
  • Dalhousie University Men’s Hockey Team – 5 Seasons (1989 – 1994)
    • A standout defenseman for the hockey team and played a team record 174 consecutive games, which included every regular season and playoff game in 5 year career with the school.
  • Attended the Vancouver Canucks training camp in 1992
  • Played 3 seasons professionally
    • 1994 – 95  Hampton Roads Admirals, Norfolk, VA (ECHL)
    • 1995 – 96  Varnamo GIK Tigers, Sweden (Division II)
    • 1998 – 99  Chesapeake Ice Breakers,              
                                       Upper Marlboro, MD (ECHL)

Coaching Experience:

  • East Hants Junior “A” Penguins – Halifax, NS  (Assistant Coach)
  • Saint Mary’s University – Halifax, NS  (Assistant Coach)
  • Professional Coach for 5 seasons in the ECHL, the Premiere “AA” Hockey League.  Worked closely with several NHL and AHL hockey teams in developing players within the Minor league system.  Served as the Head Coach for the Texas Wildcatters before hurricane Rita cancelled the season in 2004-05.

  • Currently an Coach and Advisor for the Bowie Ice Hockey Club
  • Continues to be instrumental in coaching the region’s top player prospects and has been credited in developing many of the area’s top players in such events as::

Accolades:

  • The area’s winningest High School Hockey Coach
  • Lead the DeMatha Catholic Stags to 5 consecutive MSHL State Championships from 1997 – 2001, winning the Title 4 times. 
  • Won 5 State High School Championships
  • Coached DeMatha Catholic to the State Title finishing second 6 times.
  • Currently the winningest Coach in DeMatha’s Hockey program.
  • Named as The Washington Post High School Coach of the Year in 2001. 
  • Named Mid Atlantic Prep League (MAPHL) Coach of the Year in 2014 – 15.

Family:

Currently a member of the Computer Science Faculty at DeMatha Catholic.  

Tony and his wife Tina reside in Huntingtown, Maryland with their 4 children; Savannah, Kaleb, Brooke and Delaney

School and Hockey Program Overview

School History and Highlights

Established in 1946 and privately owned by the Trinitarian Order, DeMatha Catholic High School, located in Hyattsville, MD, offers four year academic enrollment to about 900 young men.

In 1984 and 1991, DeMatha was named a “National School of Excellence” by the U.S. Department of Education. In addition to strong academics, DeMatha offers many extra-curricular activities, including a nationally recognized music program and excellent athletic programs.

The mission of DeMatha’s sports program is to nurture student athletes to achieve their full potential and leadership, academics, teamwork and athletics, through a program that emphasizes discipline, commitment, fitness, team play and sportsmanship.

  • With two (2)  teams, Prep and Varsity II. DeMatha hockey offers options for all levels of players.
  • The 2017 - 2018 Hockey Season will add a third, Junior Varsity (JV) team.

The Hockey Players

The heart of our program

  • For the past six out of eleven years, the Washington Post has named a DeMatha player "Player of the Year" (Diron Insley, Jeff Earley, Danny Collins, Gary Burgess, Greg Costa, and Bobby Plant).
  • DeMatha players have been invited to the National High School Showcase, Hockey Night in Boston, EJHL Showcase Tryouts, USHL Showcase Tournaments, and USA Hockey's National Development Camps.
  • After graduation, Stag skaters have continued skating at ACHA, NCAA Division I and 3 schools, and Junior and USHL hockey teams across the country. Two players have played professionally in North America and Europe.

The Ice Time

A competitive edge

  • DeMatha hockey offers a competitive schedule and more ice time than any other program in the Washington, DC area. The Prep team averages 4 to 5 days a week on the ice, and our Varsity and Varsity II teams averages 3 to 4 days a week on the ice.


 


History

Hockey History and Highlights

  • The DeMatha hockey program began in 1987 under the direction of Fr. Claude Gravel, O.S.S.T. and Coach Pat Krimm. This program was a charter member of the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League (MSHL) which grew from 10 to over 125 teams.
  • In the 2007”2008 season, DeMatha became a charter member in the inaugural season of the Mid”Atlantic Prep Hockey League (MAPHL). In the MAPHL, DeMatha continued it's elite status in the Mid”Atlantic region winning the championship in the first season ('08) and playing in the finals each year since. Previously, DeMatha was a dominant force in the MSHL, winning nine Varsity (1990, 1991, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004) and two Junior Varsity championships.
  • In tournament play, DeMatha Hockey teams have established a tradition of excellence.
    • Tournament wins include the Cambria County War Memorial Invitational Tournament (1993)
    • Frederick Pre”Season Shootout (1995 and 2006)
    • Piney Orchard Christmas High School Clash (1995)
    • Inaugural Mayor's Cup (1999)
    • Invitational High School Hockey Tournament (1999)
    • Inaugural St. Charles Catholic Thanksgiving Tournament (1999)
    • The Princeton Day Tournament (2009)
    • First US High School team to win the annual "Sommet" Tournament in Montreal in 1995, and repeated as champions in 1998.

DeMatha - Shadow Visit

It is strongly recommended that any 8th grade student considering DeMatha as a high school option experience a "typical" day here.  The 8th grader, or Shadow, will spending a full day with a current DeMatha student, or Host.  

*When registering ensure that you mention, your interest in the Hockey Program, so that every effort can be made to have you share the day with one of the hockey athletes.
